Matthew Shepard Foundation

Matthew ShepardMatthew Shepard Foundation

Replacing hate with understanding, compassion and acceptance, The Matthew Shepard Foundation was founded by Dennis and Judy Shepard in memory of their 21-year-old son, Matthew, who was murdered in an anti-gay hate crime in Wyoming in October 1998. The Foundation seeks to replace hate with understanding, compassion and acceptance through educational, outreach and advocacy programs.

Judy Shepard, who authored the New York Times bestseller The Meaning of Matthew: My Son’s Murder in Laramie, and a World Transformed, continues to advocate for human and civil rights around the world by continuing to tell Matthew’s story.

Athlete Ally

Hudson Taylor, Founder & Executive Director

As an athlete in high school and college, Hudson Taylor often observed the use of homophobic language and demeaning humor, especially in sports. Soon after enrolling at the University of Maryland, he befriended LGBT students in his theatre classes and became increasingly aware of the pain caused by homophobic behavior.

Hudson, who is not gay, felt it was imperative he confront the reality sports often marginalize LGBT athletes, coaches and others through systemic homophobia and transphobia. He decided to take action as a straight ally to change athletic culture for the better.

To stand in solidarity with the LGBT community, Hudson wore an LGBT equality sticker from the Human Rights Campaign on his wrestling headgear. Though he encountered criticism from his peers, but received positive attention from the media, and received thousands of emails from parents and closeted athletes, expressing thanks and sharing their own experiences of homophobia and transphobia in sports.

This experience inspired Hudson to launch Athlete Ally.

Give-A-DamnThe Give a Damn Campaign, a program of the True Colors Fund, works to inspire everyone, especially straight people, to get informed, get involved, and give a damn about gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender equality.

The True Colors Fund is honored and trilled to participate in the Global Pride Summit. Inspiring and encouraging LGBT people to celebrate themselves and grow as individuals and a community is a key part of our mission to end homelessness among LGBT youth. Through our work, we are helping youth create promising futures for themselves, and building a world in which all young people can be their true selves.

Anne Harris

Anne-HarrisAnne Harris

Thank you to Anne Harris, her wonderful music, and for her sharing her gift in the Global Pride Summit homepage video.

Chicago-based singer-songwriter and fiddle player Anne Harris has been crafting and evolving her unique sound for over a decade, spanning four indie studio records and countless live performances. She’s also played fiddle live or in studio for numerous other artists, including blues harp master Billy Branch, breaking rockers Beware of Darkness, and occasional stints with hippie legends Jefferson Starship. But her highest profile to date has risen from her work with trance-blues innovator and multi-Blues Music Award winner, Otis Taylor, with whom she’s currently touring internationally.

Although it’s been reported that "Anne Harris plays violin like [Buddy] Guy wields his guitar," (Orange County Register) and her recognition within the Blues community notwithstanding, she is decidedly not a straight-ahead Blues player.
