Topic: JUST BE YOU - Success will Follow
At age 10, my Mom told me “if the whole world tells you something is wrong and you feel it is right, #$@%! them.” That set an early stage for truly believing in myself. Being gay and a female CEO could be perceived as a double whammy if I let it be - I don’t. I believe that my skills, experience and attitude sets more of a stage for who I am than any labels others can attach to me.
In my thirties, I stepped into the “corporate closet” for a couple of years. I was totally out of congruity and faltered often. I then boldly stepped back into myself and was unstoppable. My lifestyle is, quite simply, not an issue.
Kim is the CEO of Decision Toolbox, a cutting-edge company that is 100% virtual, with more than 60 team members working remotely across the U.S. This unique business model played a key role in the company being awarded the Alfred P. Sloan Award for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility in 2009, 2011 and 2012. Decision Toolbox was also named one of the “Fastest Growing Private Companies” by the Orange County Business Journal in 2012. In addition, they have been named 3 years running to the INC 500/5000 List of Fastest Growing Private Companies. Calling Kim unconventional is an understatement – her former endeavors include 10 years as a TV and Foreign Correspondent, a stint at Club Med and a near miss at a spot on the Olympic ski team.

Whether he’s walking the halls of Congress to help educate the Hill on the differences in nuclear reactors or belting out his favorite tunes with the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington D.C., it is hard to miss Samuel Brinton and his bright red mohawk haircut. The signature hairstyle started as a dare in graduate school and continues to turn heads.
As the Clean Energy Fellow at Third Way, Samuel is responsible for researching and analyzing the best information available on a wide range of topics—from freight efficiency, to carbon capture and sequestration, to energy growth across the globe. Samuel is also concentrating on a year-long project near and dear to his heart: nuclear energy policy. Before joining Third Way, Samuel was a graduate student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology studying nuclear science and engineering and technology policy. The busy life of Boston was a big change from Samuel’s undergraduate years surrounded by the wheat fields of Kansas. While at Kansas State University, Samuel pursued dual degrees in Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering as well as Vocal Music Performance (he sings opera) with a minor in Chinese Language. During his studies, Samuel worked with some of the leading energy laboratories such as Idaho National Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory, think tanks like the Clean Air Task Force and the Breakthrough Institute, and researchers at MIT and Harvard Kennedy School.
You might not expect a nuclear scientist from Kansas to have a bright red mohawk but that is part of the reason Samuel has it. Having a chat on preconceptions is right up his alley. Whether that’s on technical topics or social issues like supporting LGBT survivors of conversion therapy, Samuel is always willing to have the tough conversations with an open mind.
